it's that time once again folks for another in the most collectable and anticipated series of releases this year. cactus island's residents association hits its twelfth volume with a superb little ep from ylid, known for his work on several net.labels including, but not limited to, sutemos. this is easily the most oddball release in the series so far but, in my opinion, that sets it apart from the others very nicely. considerably more textural and abstract it comes to you with delicious layers of processed sound including splendid twinkly guitar tones and some beautifully realised rhythmic elements. at times it's distinctly reminiscent of the work of minamo or fonica (think plop, spekk or apestaartje but a bit lighter). added to this is a more song-based sound complete with vocals on one of the tracks (don't be scared, they're gorgeous and really work). yet another satisfying and lovely release from this incredibly consistent series which could, conceivably, be my favourite so far. smallfish records
